Lockdown Browser
A lockdown browser is required to start the assessment. District IT can push it like other software, or staff/students can download the application. Students are blocked from launching the assessment without the lockdown browser.
- PC or Mac OS: The SafeExam Browser download is required for students to access the lockdown browser. In addition, a configuration file is required to allow students to access the assessment.
- Chromebook: Districts need to be enrolled in a Google Enterprise or Education account that allows Kiosk Mode on student devices. The SummitK12 App is required for students to access the assessment.
High‑Security Rules
Teachers and Administrators at the district and campus level are not permitted to preview test content before or after administration.
- Growth Assessments are delivered as an add‑on for Dynamic Science partners; they remain secure: no teacher preview, no item exposure in reports.
- Students and teachers cannot see which items or answers were correct after submission.
- Completed BOY/EOY growth assessments are not visible on the Student Dashboard to maintain confidentiality.
- Assessments are only visible on the Student Dashboard during the assigned window and require a class-specific code to access. Codes auto‑reset after every use or at window close
Teachers can also reset the code on demand.
Additional Information
-
Audio and CLS appear where applicable.
-
Due to the inability of the lockdown browsers to open a new tab for students, 6th, 7th, 8th, IPC, Chemistry, and Physics have an addendum that can be printed.
-
Completion of the BOY and EOY Growth Assessments is required to show growth and data for the Growth Assessment Report.
-
EOY Growth Assessment may include an AI‑scored Short Constructed Response (SCR) per final policy alignment, but BOY will not include an SCR.

- For the class (or individual students), set Start and Close Date & Time; optionally set a Daily Testing Window (e.g., 8 AM–3 PM) if enabled in settings.
4) Administering the Assessment
- When logging into the assessment, students first need to enter a Lockdown Browser, which is dependent on their computer operating system. For more information about the lockdown browser, see the LockDown Browser section.
- Once they have entered the lockdown browser, students are required to have an access code (provided by the teacher from the Teacher Growth Assessment table) to begin the assessment.
- Share the class access code with students.
- Each class has its own code.
- You can refresh a class code anytime; codes also auto‑reset after a student uses the code once or when the window closes—whichever comes first.
- You can also reset a single student’s code.
- Watch for notifications when students start but haven’t submitted. Additional reminders are provided, 3, 2, and 1 day before the window closes.
⚠️ Security Note: Teachers cannot open, preview, or print the assessment. Data access is via the Student Growth reports only; no items or answer keys are available. |
5) Special Considerations
Due to the inability of the lockdown browsers to open a new tab for students, 6th, 7th, 8th, IPC, Chemistry, and Physics have an addendum Reference Material that can be printed.
- 6th-8th grade Science Reference Material
- IPC Reference Material
- Chemistry Reference Material
- Physics Reference Material
6) View your results
Two reports are available - Student Growth Report and TEKS Mastery Report.
- The Student Growth Report shows the student growth between BOY and EOY based on the Growth Assessments.
- The TEKS Mastery Report shows student performance on the Growth Assessment by TEKS and Strand for targeted instruction to support Student Growth.
To access the reports:
- From Reports on the Teacher Dashboard or the View Report link, open Student Growth Assessments to see BOY/EOY averages and growth by class and by student.
Student
This section reviews what students experience for proctoring guidance.
1. Students open the BOY/EOY Science Growth Assessment on their Student Dashboard
2. If the lockdown browser isn’t detected, they see a message to install/use it. Dependent on the operating system of the student’s computer, students will utilize either Safe Exam Browser or Google Kiosk.
⚠️ Security Note: Chromebooks MUST log in through the SUMMIT K12 App in order to access the lockdown brower and the assessment. For more information, see the LockDown Browser section. |
3. Students enter the class access code provided by the teacher and start the assessment. If the incorrect code is entered, the assessment will not begin.
4. The assessment runs inside the lockdown browser (no other windows allowed). Students finish, review, and submit; after submission, they cannot see which items were correct or access the assessment.
5. The assessment does not appear on their dashboard.
Lockdown Browser
Growth Assessments on Summit K12 require a secure test environment to ensure academic integrity. Depending on the student’s device type, districts must configure either the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) or the Summit K12 Chromebook App. This guide walks District Admins and IT staff through the setup process.

Key Points for District Admins & IT Teams
For Windows and MacOS Devices
Step 1: Push Safe Exam Browser to Student Devices
- IT administrators must deploy the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) to all district-managed student laptops and desktops (Windows/Mac).
- Once installed, SEB will automatically launch when a student clicks on a Growth Assessment in their dashboard.
- If a student attempts to access the test in a regular browser (non-SEB), they will be blocked.
Step 2: Student Launch Flow
- Student clicks on their Growth Assessment from the My Summit dashboard.
- The LMS verifies the device is running SEB.
- Student is prompted to enter an Access Code.
Step 3: Access Code Retrieval
-
Teachers: Access the code from the Growth Assessments tile in their teacher dashboard.
-
Campus Admins: Retrieve codes from School Assessment Management by clicking the assign icon next to the class list.
- Codes are unique to the class and can be reset at any time.
Step 4: Taking the Assessment
Once the student enters the access code, SEB locks down the testing environment.
Students cannot:
- Open new tabs
- Search the internetRecord their screen
- Access other applications
After completing the test:
- Students submit their responses.
- No review screen is shown.
- The assessment will not appear in the student’s Completed section on their My Summit dashboard.
For Chromebook Devices
⚠️ Note: The Safe Exam Browser cannot be installed on Chromebooks. Instead, districts must use the Summit K12 application in Kiosk Mode. |
Step 1: Enable Summit K12 Application in Kiosk Mode
- District IT administrators must deploy the Summit K12 App through their Google Education or Enterprise Console.
- Configure the app to run in Kiosk Mode. This ensures assessments open in a locked-down environment.
Step 2: Student Launch Flow
- Students open their Chromebook and select the app “Summit K12: Log in to the site”.
- Students navigate to their dashboard and select the Growth Assessment to begin testing
- If kiosk mode is active, the student is prompted for their Access Code.
- Teachers and admins retrieve the code the same way as for Windows/Mac (see above).
- Students complete the test in a restricted environment.
Step 3: Security and Submission
- While in kiosk mode, students cannot access other Chromebook features.
- Once the assessment is submitted, no review screen appears, and the assignment is hidden from the student’s Completed Assignments list on their dashboard.
Step 4: Exiting Kiosk Mode
- Students can exit kiosk mode by holding down the power button. They can choose to power down their computer or exit the application.
Key Points for District Admins & IT Teams
- Windows/Mac: Install and push Safe Exam Browser with .seb file.
- Chromebooks: Deploy the Summit K12 App in Kiosk Mode via Google Admin Console.
- Access Codes: Retrieved by teachers or admins.
- Student Experience: Locked-down, secure environment with no post-submission review.

FAQ & Troubleshooting
Q: My teacher can’t see the Assign button.
A: The district or campus window isn’t open yet (tile shows a lock), or the window has closed (Assign changes to View Report). Check dates on your Growth Assessments page.
Q: Students get a message about the browser.
A: They need to install/launch the lockdown browser. District IT can push the install; otherwise, provide the download link. If using a Chromebook, students need to access the LMS through the Summit K12 app.
Q: Can I extend a class window or unassign a student?
A: Only if the district/campus has granted that permission in Settings. Ask your district/campus admin.
Q: Do students/teachers ever see the questions or which answers were right?
A: No. In order to keep the assessment data valid and reliable, the assessment items are kept secure and confidential. After submission, students are not able to view the items missed, and the assessment does not appear on student dashboards.
Q: What happens to in‑progress tests at window close?
A: If enabled, the system auto‑submits them at 11:59 PM local on the close date.
