There are a few different ways for students to record and submit their speaking recordings on Summit K12 depending on the activity that they are working on. This guide can also be used to model for students how to record on Summit K12.
Testing the Microphone Before Getting Started
Recording on a Benchmark Assessment or Quiz
How Long Can a Speaking Recording Be?
Recording on the Pronunciation Perfector
Teacher View vs. Student View
For some activities, teacher accounts are automatically set with accommodations when accessing speaking activities. However, students do not have accommodations enabled by default. For example, the teacher view will display a play button on each question, which is not visible for students. For more information on enabling accommodations for students visit Accommodations - WIDA.
Testing the Microphone Before Getting Started
We recommend students test their microphone before beginning a speaking activity to ensure their audio is detected. Learn more about our Microphone Test tool.
Recording on a Benchmark Assessment or Quiz
Once students are on a speaking question on an ELD Benchmark or Access Readiness item type, the audio playback will start playing. Students can only record their answers once, so we recommend that they write down their thoughts* and practice what they will say before recording.
*Speaking Graphic Organizers for students can be found in the Teacher's Guide. For more information visit Instructional Resources: Teacher's Guide for Connect to Literacy - WIDA.
Students will follow the steps below to record:
Step 1: Select the Microphone button to begin recording the answer. The student must be sure to speak clearly and loudly into their microphone.
Step 2: Select the Stop button when finished recording.
Step 3: Select the green Play button to listen to the recording.
Speaking recordings will be saved automatically once students move on to the next question. The speaking recordings will be graded once the assessment or quiz is submitted.
Recording on an Activity
Students can follow the instructions below to record their responses on a speaking activity.
Once students are on a speaking question, they will first select the Play button to listen to the audio playback and instructions. They only have one attempt to record their answer, so we recommend students write down their thoughts* and practice what they will say before recording.

When students are ready to record, they will select the red Record button to record their answer.
Once students start recording, a blue bar at the bottom will show how much time they have spent recording. Students can select the Stop button once they finish recording.
Speaking recordings will be saved automatically once students move on to the next question. The speaking recordings will be graded once the activity is submitted.
How Long Can a Speaking Recording Be?
Summit K12 will stop recording a response once the time limit has been reached for each question.
It is important for students to keep track of the bar as they record! When it reaches the end, the system will automatically stop recording.
Recording on the Pronunciation Perfector
The Pronunciation Perfector (PP) is not a graded assignment, but it will help students practice their speaking.
Students will first select Push to Speak to start recording. When the button changes to Listening , it means it is recording their answer. The PP will stop recording when it stops detecting audio. Students can also press Click to Stop to finish recording at any time.
If students see Try Again or Push to Speak , it means they need to try recording one more time. Students can select the blue button to record again.
If students see Correct , it means they said the word correctly and the PP will move them to the next word.
To finish, students will select Finish Attempt to submit. Once submitted, students will see a green check mark or a red “try again” message.
If there is no audio detected, students will have three attempts to record before being automatically advanced to the next question.
