Connect to Literacy for WIDA™ English language development includes up to three different courses whose contents vary depending on the grade level band a class is assigned:
- Interpretive Mode
- Expressive Mode
- Language Foundation Skills
When enrolling students in a Connect to Literacy class, ensure they are enrolled in the correct grade so that students are working with the appropriate grade-level content. This is especially important when unenrolling students in one class and enrolling them in another. Any progress made in the class they were initially enrolled in will transfer to the new class, as long as the courses’ content is the same.
Read through the scenarios below to understand how the course differentiation may impact your implementation. Navigate to the Edit page of your class to view the grade level of the course.
Scenario A: Different grade, different grade level band
Mayra is a 3rd-grade student who was enrolled in a 4th-grade Connect to Literacy class and took the BOY assessments for Interpretive and Expressive Modes. A score appears for all assessments, and all PLP #1 are generated. Later, a teacher removes Mayra from the 4th-grade class and enrolls her in a 3rd-grade class. Mayra's scores from the BOY will still appear on reports however, when she logs in to her account, she will not see PLP #1 anymore, and the BOYs she submitted will disappear. This is because 3rd and 4th-grade courses are not in the same grade level band for Interpretive and Expressive Modes. All of her data will be archived under her previous grade level and will not be transferred to her new course. Mayra would need to retake both assessments in the new class she's been enrolled in.
Scenario B: Different grade, same grade level band
Robbie is a 7th-grade student mistakenly enrolled in a 6th-grade class. They take all the MOYs in Interpretive and Expressive Modes. The Campus Testing Coordinator notices Robbie has been enrolled in the wrong class and enrolls them in a 7th-grade class instead. Since 6th-8th grades are in the same grade level band for both Interpretive and Expressive Modes, all of Robbie's data will transfer over. They will not have to retake any assessments and can continue working on their generated PLPs #3.
