The Reading-Writing ELD Benchmark Assessments we offer in our Connect to Literacy program for TELPAS contain Constructed Response items that are unscored by our AI. These questions are not factored into the student's initial Writing score. The initial Writing score users see is a reflection of the student's performance on the following Item Types:
- Type 1: Multiple Choice
- Type 2: Text Entry
Teachers have the option of scoring Type 3 Constructed Response items and, once scored, the student's Writing score will adjust accordingly. Leaving the constructed responses unscored will not prevent a student's PLP from generating however, the score for each CR item will remain as "Pending".
Note - The student's PLP will remain unchanged after the CR items have been scored.
1. To score your students' constructed responses on the Reading-Writing benchmarks, go to your class and select Reports. This will open the TEACHER REPORTS DASHBOARD.
2. Under Reading-Writing Reports, choose Reading-Writing Progress.
3. Select a student’s name to view their individual score report. Students without a score have not started or submitted the benchmark. The CR column indicates how many of the three constructed response items have been scored.
4. Select the student’s fraction under the CR column to navigate to the constructed response items that can be scored. They are typically the last three questions.
5. Scroll down to the student's responses. Select the green Score: Pending bar to begin scoring.
6. Use the provided rubric(s)* to score the constructed response from 1- 4. Use the Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs) for additional assistance. Select Comments to provide optional feedback.
Grades 2-3 will use a Four-Point Writing Rubric
Grades 4-12 will use a Twelve-Point Writing Rubric
Toggle between Vocabulary, Usage, and Completeness and assign a score using all 3 rubrics.
7. Click Save. It should now show the student's score for that question.
8. Follow the same process to score the remainder of the constructed responses. Then scroll to the bottom and click Finish to save and update the student’s Writing score.
You will automatically return to the student's individual score report. Now, you should see a score under the CR column as well as an updated score in the Writing column.
*Summit K12's rubrics for the Writing Constructed Response items in our TELPAS Readiness program follow the scoring guidelines released by TEA (11/30/22). Please view the TEA website to learn more.
