Summit K12’s Expressive Mode course in the Connect to Literacy program provides automated grading of student voice recordings, which is designed to follow the WIDA© Speaking rubrics.
Although Summit K12’s scoring is effective in most cases, anomalies may occasionally occur. In such cases, the score for any Speaking item can be manually adjusted to ensure the most accurate representation of a student’s English speaking proficiency.
In addition to potential scoring outliers, students may face other challenges, such as malfunctioning microphones or suboptimal recording conditions, which can impact the quality of their speaking responses. If a teacher can assess the student's spoken response separately, they can overwrite the speaking scores for the questions affected.
A Pending score status signifies that the system was unable to process and score the audio recording. To remove the “Pending” label, the teacher can either score the response using the steps below or contact support@summitk12.com.
1. To overwrite a score, select Reports on your Teacher Dashboard.
2. Use the Class dropdown menu on the Teacher Reports Dashboard to navigate to the applicable class.
3. Select the corresponding report for the section of the assigned content.
- The S-W Benchmarks & PLPs report will include data from the ELD Speaking assessments.
- The ELD Readiness - Speaking report will include data for the Readiness Speaking item type quizzes.
- The Supplemental ELD - Speaking report will include data for the supplemental Speaking practice quizzes.
4. On the S-W Benchmarks & PLPs report, select a student's Speaking score to see their assessment and access their scores.
Alternatively, select the student’s name and then the score for a specific Speaking quiz on the ELD Readiness or Supplemental ELD Speaking reports.
5. Navigate to a speaking question. The green bar will indicate the Auto Graded Score. Select to open the built-in rubric used for scoring.
6. Choose a new score and select Save. The system will remove the Auto Graded Score indicator.
7. Complete steps 5-6 for the remaining speaking questions as needed, and the score on the report will update to reflect a new average where applicable.
When manually adjusting the score on the ELD Speaking assessment, if the new Speaking score is at a higher PLD level than the original score, the student’s PLP will readjust to reflect the new score.
Summit K12 highly recommends teachers listen to student recordings throughout the year to ensure the scores are accurate and make changes as needed.
